Le jeune couple (Lord Glenarvan a 34 ans) monte une exp\u00e9dition pour tenter de retrouver les survivants avec l\u2019aide du commandant John Mangles et de son second Tom Austin, un vieux loup de mer. Ils sont accompagn\u00e9s par les enfants du Capitaine Grant disparu avec “Britannia”, le major MacNabbs ainsi qu\u2019un savant dans la lune, Jacques-Eliacin-Fran\u00e7ois-Marie Paganel, secr\u00e9taire de la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de g\u00e9ographie de Paris, membre correspondant des soci\u00e9t\u00e9s de Berlin, de Bombay, de Darmstadt, de Leipzig, de Londres, de Vienne, de New York, membre honoraire de l\u2019institut royal g\u00e9ographique et ethnographique des Indes orientales, qui s\u2019est tromp\u00e9 de navire au moment d\u2019embarquer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The action begins in 1864. While Lord and Lady Glenarvan are on an excursion off Glasgow on board their yacht, “Duncan”, the crew catches a shark in the belly of which they discover a bottle of Veuve Clicquot which contains a message distress in poor condition; the latter clearly indicates the degree of latitude (37\u00b0 11\u2032) of the sinking of “Britannia”, but any indication of longitude has become illegible. The young couple (Lord Glenarvan is 34) mounts an expedition to try to find the survivors with the help of Commander John Mangles and his second in command Tom Austin, an old sea dog. They are accompanied by the children of the missing Captain Grant with “Britannia”, Major MacNabbs as well as a scientist in the moon, Jacques-Eliacin-Fran\u00e7ois-Marie Paganel, secretary of the Geographical society of Paris, corresponding member of the societies of Berlin, Bombay, Darmstadt, Leipzig, from London, Vienna, New York, honorary member of the Royal Geographical and Ethnographic Institute of the East Indies, who took the wrong ship when embarking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sa collaboration avec l’\u00e9diteur Pierre-Jules Hetzel aboutit \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation des “Voyages extraordinaires”, s\u00e9rie populaire de romans d’aventures, dont les c\u00e9l\u00e8bres “Cinq semaines en ballon” (1863), “Voyage au centre de la Terre” (1864), “De la terre \u00e0 la lune” (1865), “Vingt mille lieues sous les mers” (1870), “Le tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours” (1872), “L’\u00eele myst\u00e9rieuse” (1874). Il est l’un des \u00e9crivains les plus importants de France et de toute l’Europe gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l’influence \u00e9vidente de ses livres sur la litt\u00e9rature d’avant-garde et le surr\u00e9alisme. Il est consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme l’un des “p\u00e8res de la science-fiction”. Il a re\u00e7u la L\u00e9gion d’honneur en 1892 pour ses contributions \u00e0 l’\u00e9ducation et \u00e0 la science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jules Gabriel Verne (1828-1905) was a French writer, playwright and poet famous for his adventure novels and for his profound influence on the literary genre of science fiction. At a very young age, he decided to devote himself to literature. His collaboration with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel resulted in the creation of \u201cExtraordinary Voyages\u201d, a popular series of adventure novels, including the famous \u201cFive Weeks in a Balloon\u201d (1863), \u201cJourney to the Center of the Earth\u201d (1864), \u201cFrom the Earth to the Moon\u201d (1865), \u201cTwenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea\u201d (1870), \u201cAround the World in Eighty Days\u201d (1872), \u201cThe Mysterious Island\u201d (1874). He is one of the most important writers in France and in all of Europe thanks to the obvious influence of his books on avant-garde literature and surrealism. He is considered one of the \u201cfathers of science fiction\u201d. He was awarded with the Legion of Honor in 1892 for his contributions to education and science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
